This is the start of my eighth year as the superintendent of the Fort Sumner Municipal Schools. Our district is a rural, county-wide system in eastern New Mexico. We serve the children and parents of De Baca County, approximately 2, 345 square miles and about 315 students in grades preschool through grades 12. For the 2012-2013 school year, our principals and staff are committed to the shift to teaching to the CCSS in all instructional areas as we prepare our students for the move to CCSS assessments in the 2014-2015 school year. By teaching to the deeper understanding required by the CCSS versus the more shallow New Mexico Content Standards, it is our expectation that our students will be prepared to be successful adult graduates ready to either enter the world of work or attend post-secondary education.
